Jeff Gonzales and Marvin Basinal Head to Head in the Open Division of DC King of the Mountain in Baguio City

Baguio city is home to some of the best skateboarders in the Philippines. With its natural spots all over the city, Baguio was chosen to be the venue for the first stop of DC Philippines 2014 skate tour series in some of the major cities across the country.The DC King of the Mountain in partnership with Mountain Dew and GoPro was indeed an all out success.

over 80 competitors signed up for the DC King of the Mountain held at SM Baguio City parking grounds. It was a jam-packed action sports event delivering a dose of pure stoke to skateboarders from Cebu, Ilocos, Pangasinan, Batangas, Manila and Baler, Aurora.

Competitors were given 60 second to show their best tricks and impress the judges to move into the final 10 slot. There were groms division where in young and talented skateboarders wowed the crowed by their impressive tricks. There’s also women’s division and the open men’s division, which is the main event of the contest.

Power grom skateboarder Ikoy Velasquez from Cavite took home the championship title for groms division and a 1 year sponsorship contract with DC Philippines.

In the women’s division, Ayang Cacho dominated every round of the contest. She’s the only female competitor who landed a trick off the ramp and did a clean crooked grind on the curve ledge.

Jeff Gonzales, who’s known for his sick style and technical skills, snatched the championship title against DC Philippines best rider Marvin Basinal. It was a head to head battle. Marvin Basinal who placed 1st in the elimination round showed everyone why he deserves to be part of the DC Philippines skate athlete roster by landing a kickflip backside five-0 on the DC funbox.

The final 10 was an intense match up. In an interview, Jeff Gonzales said that he was focused on completing the trick. After 6 failed tries on the practice run, he nailed a 360 flip 50/50 on the DC funbox. After that he was swarmed by his friends celebrating what is to be the greatest moment in Jeff’s skateboarders career. “focus, that’s the key in landing a trick,” said Jeff Gonzales.

Due to some technical ruling over contract deals, the 1 year sponsorship deal was awarded to Lorneil Bihasa from Baler, Aurora province who placed fourth over all in the contest.

The DC King of the Mountain 2014 is presented by DC Philippines, in partnership with Mountain Dew, GoPro and Dan’s.
